Night changes the landscape
an everyday neighborhood street
layered in darkness
becomes a path of mystery
What do the shadows hold
What is behind the tree that looms out
Its branches transformed into arms,
with claws outstretched.
On this moonlit night
cars turn into hulking shapes
where anything or anyone could be hiding.
Headlights startle
their bright lights
as loud as a scream
disrupting the night air
And I
quicken my pace
hands clutching my purse
a few moments from home
listening, listening, listening,
for hushed footsteps behind me
I get to my doorstep
breathing a sigh of relief
as I open my front door
and walk into the safety of the landscape
I call home…
White Noise
by Carolyn Wolfe
My fan
at night
whispers around the room
the air is breezy
cool
and filled with what sounds like
distant conversations
sometimes a shout
sometimes mere murmurs
coming in waves
like a group of people
all talking at once
which makes me wonder
is white noise
capturing conversations
just a dimension
apart from where my bed stands?
Is there a party,
an argument,
or some other vocal disturbance
traveling the impossible distance
from one realm to another?
And if so,
are my words also
captured
and flung
across the expanse
to be distributed
into their bedrooms?
Could
murmurs of my conversations
be
worrying or mystifying
all
those
unknown others?
Once again
I turn my fan on
as I lay in bed
listening, listening, listening,
only to ponder
what exactly
am I listening to?
